I had a new client call me the other day. They are opening a branch office and need to share files that are hosted on a NAS on the main office network.

I am planning to configure a VPN gateway at both ends and keep the connection persistent (if possible). Is there a distro with this built-in?

Also, I'm sure HIPAA laws will apply since they are a home health provider.

Here is a great vpn+firewall http://www.linuxhotbox.com/distros/firewall-vpn.htm

you might be better off installing OpenVPN and port forwarding on the router

could you explain the concept?
the Linux OSs are going to be the ends and from them you connect on one side the NAS, and at the other side what ?

The concept is....

Main Office - 8 or 9 workstations + NAS on the LAN

Branch office - 8 workstations on the LAN

Linux VPN gateways on both sides to share the files from the NAS to both networks. Encryption over WAN (Internet) is a must.

I'm looking at using CentOS on 2 identical machines for the VPN gateways.

You can have it going straight from pc to pc with a app like OpenVPN, but remember you will still have to open ports on routers

which router depends, the receiving or server computer will have to have port forwarding enabled and configured, now if you want to vpn both ways than both routers will need to be configured

ok, If that was complex, how about a easy solution with no router configs, download and install TeamViewer, it works in Linux
