a response to the request by +Ryan Ridenour on the latest Linux For The Rest Of Us:

For managing the company accounts, consider Phreebooks/Phreedom (http://www.phreesoft.com) - a self-hosted web-based accounting system. I did a writeup on it at (http://writtenandread.net/phreebooks/) - it is pretty solid, and it is very customizable, so the administrator can hide the parts of the system that should not be available to users. I quite liked some parts of SimpleInvoices (although when I used it, they put quotes in the accounts as an unpaid invoice; that makes no sense at all to me, and I hope they have fixed it), but with Phreebooks you get all of it.

Now: I quite liked Gnucash, too - and when I was working at a lawfirm, I was actually working on dropping in the timetracking system Kimai (http://www.kimai.org/en/documentation/fetch-kimai-sources.html). Again self-hosted, the system has a tracker, so if you are away from home, you can log in, turn on the time tracker for the particular client, do your work and then stop the tracker; with that tool, you can bill the client with precise time later on, or if you have someone doing invoicing, they can pull it right out. It is very effective - of course this will not give you the invoice if you are on-site, but it can produce a receipt for the time spent. I advise getting the latest sources - there is a long time and a lot of features between stable release and development version.
